Happy Hour is a time to kick back, relax and unwind from a hard day of work. Locals and visitors alike flock to various bars to seek out the best Happy Hour deals at the Lake of the Ozarks. Look no further! Wicked Willie's recently launched their new Happy Hour prices that include not only drinks, but food items as well! Before we dive into the specials, let’s take a look at where Happy Hour originated.

How Happy Hour Came About

Happy Hour is usually referred to as a time where bars and restaurants will have special prices on their drink – and sometimes food – items, but only for certain hours. However, the origin of Happy Hour has nothing to do with alcohol. It all began in the 1920s when sailors were out at sea. It was a slang term used to describe the period of time when sailors engaged in various forms of entertainment, such as boxing or wrestling matches, to take their mind off of the seafaring life.

During prohibition, Americans had to get creative if they wanted to wet their whistle. Before going out to dinner, people would gather in secret speakeasies, or even at home, to consume illegal cocktails. The term “Happy Hour” – taken directly from the Naval slang – would soon be used to
describe these illegal gatherings.

Marketing and Happy Hour

After the end of prohibition, the term Happy Hour stuck around, although it wasn’t yet linked to discounted drinks. After work, employees would go to their local bar before heading home. It wasn’t until the 60s and 70s that restaurants and bars started taking advantage of this time to offer drink specials with the hopes of people staying well after the discounted hours.

There are some states, though, that ban or restrict Happy Hour promotions – luckily for us, Missouri is not on those lists. Massachusetts was the first state to ban Happy Hour altogether, which happened in the 1980s. Other states put a restriction on the promotion such as banning unlimited drinks, or the length of Happy Hour itself. In the state of Missouri, there are no bans or restrictions on Happy Hour promotions.
